There are a ton of pre-med students in Utah every year, and they all wonder about the med schools in Utah. The Two Medical Schools in Utah

There are only two medical schools in Utah. The first is the University of Utah and the second is Rocky Vista.

The University of Utah is a public med school that is located in Salt Lake City. It was established in 1850, making it one of the oldest med schools in Utah or even the country! The University of Utah has a lot to offer its students including:

  • Medical education opportunities (doctors and nurses)
  • Fellowships & residencies
  • Medical/health research opportunities

Rocky Vista University is a med school that is also located in Utah, but in St. George. It was established in 2007, making it the youngest med school in Utah. Rocky Vista University has a lot to offer its students including:

  • Flexible class schedules (online classes and onsite)
  • Clinical rotations in southern Utah or northern Arizona areas of operation

University of Utah School of Medicine

The U of U School of Medicine is located in Salt Lake City Ut, and accepted its first class in 1850. The med school is closely affiliated with the University of Utah Hospital and has strong academic programs in family & preventive medicine, geriatric medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine and obstetrics-gynecology.

The U of U is located in one of the most Urban areas of Utah, and they are a well proven school with a strong curriculum and a great reputation of producing great physicians.

They have a great medical program and a history of matching into both primary care and specialties.

The nice thing about a large university system like this is that they give the medical student the opportunity to really experience all different fields of medicine.

There is also a strong focus on global medicine and having the opportunity to provide care to those parts of the world that are in dire need of it at the University of Utah.

Tuition at the University of Utah Medical School is about $40,000 in state and $70,000 out of state per year.

There are no major requirements to apply besides the usual prerequisites and a strong GPA from an accredited institution of higher learning as well as passing scores on all portions of the MCAT exam.

Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine

RVU is a med school located in St. George UT, and was established in 2007. It is the youngest med school on this list, but it has a lot to offer as well.

They have an impressive curriculum that can be tailored around your schedule (online courses or traditional face-to-face) which allows for flexibility depending on what you need from med school.

The med school takes in new students every year, but there are some requirements you’ll have to meet first. First of all you must complete a bachelor’s degree with at least 90 hours before attending med school (this is the minimum requirement).

They have a strong focus on osteopathic medicine, which is an approach that puts more emphasis on treating the whole person by using your hands and staying in tune with natural healing methods (the med school offers courses like acupuncture & chiropractic).

RVU has a lot of history behind it as well, and they have a strong reputation for creating physicians who are more than just med students. They put their students in the center of medicine by giving them hands on experiences as soon as possible great clinical rotations.

The med school is also located near Zion National Park which offers plenty of outdoor activities to help you relax after a long day of med school.

Tuition at RVU is about $58,000 per year.

Noorda College of Osteopathic Medicine

This is a brand new school, and they are set to take med students in 2022-2023. This means that they have yet to start accepting applications, but you can keep an eye out for it if you’re interested.

The med school is located on the campus of Westminster College and caters around osteopathic medicine as well (which puts more emphasis on treating the whole person).

They are also located in an Urban area of Utah, and the med school is affiliated with multiple hospitals as well.

The med school’s curriculum will be based around osteopathic medicine (including holistic treatment & prevention). They will also have a strong focus on primary care as well which means you’ll get plenty of hands-on experience early on in med school.

Tuition at the Noorda College of Osteopathic Medicine has yet to be released, but it is estimated that tuition will cost around $70,000 per year.
